Once upon a time the pharmacy, where in addition to buy paracetamol and plasters were looking for a valuable advice. Then came the web and everything changed. Analyzing the data CENSIS Use Google Trends and Google Forrester gathered for a search for Alkemy, a company specializing in digital consultancy, shows the increasing tendency of Italians to solve through the web doubts concerning their own health.

If the first point of reference remains the family doctor (56%) , the second place is the internet, which is consulted in 11% of cases compared with the paltry 4% of the pharmacist. But exactly what we look for health? Information, first of all. Through the search engines want to have details of disease (90%) or on specialized care centers (59%). You start to use the internet for services booking exams and visits (15%), while there is still a certain amount of distrust towards the purchase of drugs (3%) than in the U.S. (7%) .

Doctors also use the internet to update, search for data on the side effects of the drugs and their contraindications (61%), scientific publications, research, clinical cases.

But in addition to the diagnostics is the social aspect, the ‘ empathy between patients. We are looking for on the internet opinions and advice from those who have already had experience of a given disease. This is how Facebook pages, forums and blogs dedicated where you can talk and exchange ideas. Especially in cases of chronic diseases that require long-term care daily – such as diabetes – the sufferer seeks solace and help of who is in his condition and can give you practical information that you may not feel to ask your doctor.

Once again, the web seems to replace what once was the square, with the difference that users do not have a handful of villagers but millions of users around the world. It is important therefore to ensure that the sources are reliable.
