In Slovenia, the Health Minister resigns - The Little

Franco Babich

LJUBLJANA

. The announcement surprised everyone, even his party colleagues: Tomaz Gantar has resigned from the post of minister of health. Unable to push forward the reform of the Slovenian health care system – in part because of the divergence of views within the same majority government – has preferred to leave. His resignation is irrevocable. Within hours of the decision informed the president of his party, Deus-Pensioanti, Karl Erjavec, then the premier Alenka Bratusek and finally reporters: “There comes a time that you do not see a way out. I understand that the health care reform, whatever I do, it was no longer possible to achieve it in the right way. “

Gantar, former Minister of Health for a time in the previous center-right government led by Janez Jansa, denounced a series of resistances and obstacles to reform. To penalize the national health system, according to the former minister, help a poor wage system in the public sector, they are paid for in the same way both those working and those not working, the steady reduction in the number of employees, cuts funds, the hostility of certain politicians and trade unions against practitioners. Without naming names Gantar also spoke about corruption and the weight of the various lobbies, hindering any Timpo change, so it becomes increasingly difficult, and it will soon be impossible to ensure the continued health service quality, accessible to all and affordable cost. The former minister also complained about the lack of support had it inside the coalition, in which the requests were made, to carry forward the reform, absolutely irreconcilable. Under these conditions, stressed it was impossible to continue.

The resignation of the minister have been a surprise a little ‘for everyone, even if you already had announced six months ago Gantar not exclude its withdrawal, if it does not succeed in bringing in port reform. The allies, however, have not done a drama, perhaps because, as has been underlined the opposition, this government actually has neither the will nor the capacity to implement reforms. Less amazement instead among health professionals. The situation is serious, they argue, are necesssarie and timely measures to prevent the collapse. The hope is that the resignation of Gantar really do sound the alarm bell. A few days later the Minister of Economic Development Stanko Stepisnik, Tomaz Gantar is the second cabinet minister to resign Bratusek. On his successor, still no indiscretion. Gantar, former mayor of Piran and former director of the Island, has announced that it will take a few months break and then coming back to his work as a doctor urologist.
