Greenpeace: Snow White in action at the Ministry of Health, "Who is the ... - Weather Web

MOS_5816 This morning Greenpeace activists along with Snow White and the Wicked Witch went into action in Rome in front of the representative office of the Ministry of Health to ask the Minister Lorenzin to finally sign the decree – ready for some time – to block GMOs for the protection of biodiversity and Italian. “Who is the minister of the GMO in the realm?” And “Italy does not want GMO” messages on the banners are opened in front of the Ministry.

On June 15, in Friuli was seeded GM maize MON810 Monsanto, and the operation is likely to be repeated in other regions. Despite declarations and proclamations, yet none of the competent Ministers has adopted measures to stop the contamination in the course of and permanently prohibit the cultivation of GMOs in Italy.

Both the Senate and the House have signed motions unit to commit the government to prohibit the cultivation of GMOs. The Ministers De Girolamo, Orlando and Lorenzin authorities are able to proceed in the matter. In particular, on the desk of Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin, stop for weeks the file that enable the adoption of emergency measures to stop these plantings.

“The minister Lorenzin really wants to be the most GMOs in the realm? There are already eight European countries (Austria, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Hungary, Greece, Bulgaria, Poland) who have adopted a ban on the cultivation of Monsanto’s MON810 maize. Italy, with its wealth of biodiversity and typicality can not wait any longer. ” – Said Federica Ferrario, head of Greenpeace Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture.

In a few days, through the site www.StopOgm.org, over 55,000 people have sent a clear message to the Minister of Health: Stop GMOs. To do so, the Minister Lorenzin just sign the decree which activates the emergency measures against the maize MON810, so as to prohibit the cultivation and protect the economic and social model of development of Italian food.

GMOs in the agro-food remains a niche market, largely confined to the American continent. The 80 per cent of GM crops is limited to four countries – the United States, Brazil, Argentina and Canada. In Europe, GM crops fail to emerge. Spain is the only country where there remains a genuine cultivation of GM maize, while organic farming is increasing in Europe. That what enters GMOs with our model of agricultural production based on typicality and quality? What to do with the request of Italian consumers who want healthy products that respect our diversity?

After 16 years of marketing, three-quarters of GM crops in the field are designed to be tolerant to herbicides produced by the same companies that market them. GMOs do not increase yields, but the use of chemicals and increase profits and control of food of a handful of multinational corporations.

“GMOs and the type of mold industrial agriculture representing pose a risk to health and the environment. A model that is foreign to the path chosen from the best of Italian agriculture. Stopping them is an obligation. ” – Said Ferrario.
